This ‘memoir’ by ten year old Parris Miller is the story of her early years, her family life, her hopes and dreams. She writes of her great love for her ‘thick bulky hair’ and her even greater love for her parents. Her mother is ‘obsessed with cleanliness’ - they ‘twerk together’ to Beyonce CDs. Her father is in the army (‘He looked huge in his uniform and shrunk when he took it off’). Her Grandmother ‘has an even stronger accent than Rastamouse’ and her Grandfather lived in St Vincent and the Grenadines and ‘drunk the strongest rum in the Caribbean.’ Oh, Parris also has a goldfish who lives in a tank near her money box (hilariously, the fish doesn’t like her spending money and stares at her reproachfully whenever Parris’s hand goes near the tin!). Whether she is en route to the dentist with 'nerves jingling and dangling in my veins’ or riding the tram ‘thundering and jerking on the way to Wolverhampton’ or making glittery, feathery costumes for the Notting Hill carnival, Parris’s writing voice carries a confidence and panache beyond her years. She says of her mother than ‘she always had an observant eye when it came to sensing people’s feelings’ and clearly Parris has inherited her mother’s eye, not just for feelings but all the minutae of everyday life. The narrative ebbs and flows between straightforward ‘memoir’ and some extraordinary imagined sequences: On a train, surrounded by fans, on the way to Leicester Square for the premier of her new movie. Pillaging spice from Grenada to trade in London. Finding herself in a Harry Potter story. Even visiting Mars and Jupiter! These bold forays into the imagination are tempered by quieter, reflective passages. ‘I don’t want to die,’ she writes. ‘I want to live forever; stay young forever.
